A worldwide educational initiative, the Shell Eco Marathon encourages young engineers to design and build a vehicle capable of covering the largest possible distance using the smallest possible amount of fuel.
During the 2010 edition, which was held last month at Lausitz in Germany, the PROTO INSA CLUB team from Lyon finished thirteenth in the overall classification (out of a hundred or so competitors), with 1,833 km covered using just one liter of gas.
According to team members, further prototype enhancement is still possible (improved motor reliability, more precise adjustment, optimization of travel over the circuit, etc.). But to increase their chances of winning, the team decided to optimize their “motor ignition strategy” by calling on ADEUNIS RF.
For the performance at Lausitz, the motor of the prototype vehicle was shut off from time to time. It was started or stopped depending on what the paddock staff decided after analyzing motor data and other variables communicated during the race by the pilot (temperature, prototype speed, fuel level, etc.).
Sponsoring by ADEUNIS RF enabled the team to benefit from real-time data transmission directly from prototype to computer using long-distance ARF53 radio modems.
This enabled the technical team to immediately analyze motor performance and act in consequence to make the right decisions. Worth keeping an eye on...!
